When preserving the existing finish may be possible and why access and damage assessment come first.
Reshaping while retaining the finish
Paintless dent repair aims to restore a suitable panel contour without the conventional filler-and-repaint process. Technicians may work from behind the panel or use an appropriate external technique. The desired outcome is both an acceptable shape and a retained usable finish.
PDR describes the repair approach, not an assurance that every dent or every painted panel is suitable. Damage shape, location, material, access and coating condition need to be assessed together.
There is no universal size cutoff
A small sharp dent can be more difficult than a broad shallow distortion. A body line, stretched metal, an edge location or existing paint damage can alter what is achievable. A fist-size rule or a simple depth number is not a reliable approval test.
An inspection should also establish whether the damage is cosmetic or involves other repair needs. PDR should not be used as a label to bypass structural assessment or the manufacturer’s repair procedures.
Access must not create another problem
A tool needs an appropriate route to the work area. Do not drill access holes, enlarge existing openings or remove structural foam merely to reach a dent. Such changes can compromise the vehicle and conflict with repair requirements.
Trim removal and reassembly must follow the relevant procedure, including any components near the work area. If suitable access is unavailable, reassess the method instead of forcing a rod through a sensitive or structural part.
Define and verify the result
Controlled reflection lighting helps identify high and low areas and monitor corrections. Inspect from multiple angles and check the finish after the work. Paint damage can still occur during a procedure intended to preserve paint.
Some cases require a different method or refinishing. Discuss that possibility before work starts. PDR does not by itself establish a vehicle’s legal accident classification, insurance treatment or resale value, and no fixed repair time can be promised from the method name alone.
